Tarrytown, New York
Tarrytown, New York sits on the eastern shore of the Hudson River. It has a population of approximately 11,500 people based on the most recent U.S. Census. Tarrytown is approximately 25 miles north of midtown Manhattan and is easily accessible there by Metro North.
Tarrytown has some of the most popular and renowned sites in Westchester County. Lyndhurst is a Gothic mansion with a 67 acre park beside the Hudson River which hosts crafts festivals from spring through fall. Sunnyside is the former home of author Washington Irving, famous for his short stories, including "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." The mansion was built in 1835 and is now a museum owned by Historic Hudson Valley. Sunnyside has been open to the public since 1947. It became a historic landmark in 1962.
Other terrific attractions are the Tarrytown Music Hall, one of the oldest surviving theatres in Westchester County, (built in 1885) which hosts concerts throughout the year by folk, jazz and rock artists, as well as featuring historic films. The Castle on the Hudson is a wonderful replica of an early Norman style castle built in 1897 on one of the highest points in Westchester County. It offers luxury lodging along with the excellent Equus Restaurant. Kykuit in the northern section of Tarrytown (now called Sleepy Hollow) was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, and tours are given of the beautiful and scenic grounds and gardens by advance reservation only.
