Times of Need
Somers, New York
The town of Somers, New York was originally known as Stephentown in 1788, and was then changed to Somerstown to avoid confusion with another New York location. In 1808, the name was changed to Somers. The town has a population of 21,541 as of the last census in 2020. Somers is 32.3 square miles, and the northern town line is on the border of Putnam County.
The Town of Somers is famous as the home of the “Elephant Motel”, which was created by Hachaliah Bailey (Of Barnum and Bailey fame) to honor an elephant in the 1800’s known as “Old Bet.” The town bought the hotel in 1927 and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005. The Elephant Motel is now the Town Hall in Somers and the Justice Court is located there as well.
Muscoot Farm, a farm museum on Route 100 in the town, is another popular attraction where there are displays of various farm animals and farm implements. Muscoot also has hiking trails and is now operated by Westchester County.

Life in Somers combines quiet neighborhoods with busy roadways, local businesses, and active community spaces. While many residents appreciate the town’s balance of rural character and modern convenience, unexpected events such as a car crash on Route 100 or a fall at a grocery store can suddenly leave you with high medical bills and injuries that leave you unable to work.

Injuries That Change Lives
When an accident happens in Somers, injured individuals can turn to us. Our firm represents clients across a wide range of personal injury cases, including:
- Car, truck, bus, pedestrian, and motorcycle accidents. Motor vehicle crashes can lead to catastrophic injuries, from broken bones to spinal cord trauma. We investigate fault, gather records, and hold negligent drivers and companies accountable.
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBI). A TBI can result from even a seemingly minor collision or fall. The effects can include memory loss, cognitive changes, and long-term medical needs.
- Premises liability accidents. Property owners in Somers are required to maintain safe conditions. If unsafe walkways, spills, or poor lighting cause injuries, the owner may be liable.
- Workplace injuries. Construction site accidents and injuries at otherworkplaces affect employee’s income and can lead to a lifetime of disability. Our law firm can determine whether you are eligible for workers’ compensation benefits or a third-party claim.
- Violent assaults. Not all injuries are caused by accidents. Violent assaults, attacks, and shootings can cause permanent injuries and trauma. In these cases, you may have a claim against the assailant, regardless of the outcome of any criminal charges against them. You may also have a claim against any other liable parties, such as the owner of the property where the attack occurred.
- Catastrophic injuries. Traumatic head injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, and other permanent, life-changing injuries can leave you unable to work and may require a lifetime of personal care services and medical care. A personal injury claim allows you to seek compensation so you have the resources to pay for the care you need.
- Wrongful death claims. In New York, the surviving family members of someone killed due to negligence or violence may have a wrongful death claim. This claim can help families address the loss of a family member’s income and support and can help pay for burial costs and other expenses.
- Products liability claims. We expect that the products on store shelves and in medical settings are safe. Yet, each year Somers residents are injured by faulty medical devices, unsafe medication, poorly designed consumer products, and even food items. If you are injured, you may have a claim against the manufacturer or other at-fault parties.
- Dog bites. Animal attacks can leave victims with scarring, infections, and lasting anxiety. New York law provides remedies when an owner’s negligence leads to an attack.
Our role is to evaluate liability, identify all potential insurance coverage, and pursue fair compensation. We provide a free consultation to discuss your potential case in greater detail, so even if you do not see your injury or accident type above, contact us if you have been injured. We can explain how we may be able to help.
Common Questions From Somers Clients
Do you return calls quickly?
Yes. We reply to phone calls and emails within 24 business hours, and often the same day. We believe communication is one of the most important parts of the attorney-client relationship.
Do I have to go to court if I file a personal injury claim?
Not every case goes to trial. In fact, many personal injury claims in New York are resolved through settlement negotiations before ever reaching a courtroom. Whether your case settles or proceeds to trial depends on factors such as the strength of the evidence, the willingness of the insurance company to negotiate fairly, and the extent of your injuries.
Even when settlement is likely, preparing a case thoroughly as if it may go to trial often strengthens negotiations. At The Law Office of Mark A. Siesel, we’re ready to advocate aggressively in court but also pursue efficient resolutions when they serve your best interests.
If I’m in a traffic accident in Somers, do I need to report it? What if the other driver wants to take care of it “just between us?”
Failing to report an accident is more serious than many people realize. Under Section 600, not reporting an accident involving property damage can be charged as a traffic infraction, while failing to report an accident involving personal injury is a misdemeanor. These charges can carry fines, potential license consequences, and even jail time in certain cases.
If a driver wants to handle the matter without reporting the accident, you should be wary. That driver could accuse you of leaving the scene of the accident. In addition, failing to report the accident to your insurer, in compliance with your policy, can lead to denial of future claims or even cancellation of your policy.
Failing to report an accident can also weaken your ability to pursue an insurance claim later. If you’re facing charges under Section 600, our office can explain your options and build a strong defense.
