Rockland County is located in New York State a short distance north of New York City. In fact, the north boundary of Manhattan in Inwood is only 9.5 miles from the southern border of Rockland in Palisades, New York. Rockland is in the New York metropolitan region. The population of Rockland County pursuant to the 2000 Census was 286,753. It is part of the New York Metropolitan area.

The Supreme Court of Rockland County is in New City. The county's name is derived from "rocky land", a description of the region given by the original settlers. Rockland County is the most southern county in New York west of the Hudson River. Rockland has a total area of 199 square miles of which 25 square miles are water and 174 are land.

Rockland County is 9th on the list of wealthiest counties by median household income in the U.S. at $75,306 as of the Census in 2004. Rockland County was originally inhabited by Indian tribes known as Munsees, or Lenni Lenape. In 1609, Hendrick Hudson thought he had discovered the legendary Northwest Passage, sailed up the river that would subsequently be named for him and anchored near Haverstraw.

The Hall of Fame baseball player Babe Ruth starred in a film called Heading Home in 1920 and shot scenes in Haverstraw and Valley Cottage. 50 years later, Rock legend Bruce Springsteen recorded his first two albums with the E Street Band in Blauvelt in 1973.
