Haverstraw, New York

The town of Haverstraw is in Rockland County and is 27.5 square miles. The population of Haverstraw is about 33,000 people. The name Haverstraw is derived from the Dutch word for "oat straw." It refers to the grasslands along the river. In 1609, Henry Hudson explored the region that is now Haverstraw. The land was purchased from local natives in 1660, when it was called "Haverstroo."

During the American Revolutionary War, Haverstraw played an important role as a lookout for British activities on the Hudson River. Aaron Burr, the 3rd Vice President of the United States, visited Haverstraw frequently. The town was formed in 1788 when it was still considered part of Orange County. The Haverstraw Post Office is located on a site that was occupied by George Washington during the Revolutionary War.
