Somers, New York

The town of Somers, New York was originally known as Stephentown in 1788, and was then changed to Somerstown to avoid confusion with another New York location. In 1808, the name was changed to Somers. The town has a population of 18,350 as of the last census in 2000. Somers is 32.3 square miles and the northern town line is on the border of Putnam County.

The Town of Somers is famous as the home of the "Elephant Motel", which was created by Hachaliah Bailey (Of Barnum and Bailey fame) to honor an elephant in the 1800's known as "Old Bet." The town bought the hotel in 1927 and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005. The Elephant Motel is now the Town Hall in Somers and the Justice Court is located there as well.

Muscoot Farm, a farm museum on Route 100 in the town, is another popular attraction where there are displays of various farm animals and farm implements. Muscoot also has hiking trails and is now operated by Westchester County.
