Ossining, New York
The village of Ossining, New York has a population of approximately 24,000 people. In 1685, the village was originally named after the Indian tribe Sinck Sinck, which means stone upon stone. In 1825, construction of the famous Sing Sing Correctional Facility began. After President Garfield was assassinated in 1881, the village considered changing its name to Garfield Plains, but after objection by the City of White Plains, the name remained Sing Sing.
In 1901, when Sing Sing Correctional Facility became more notorious, (later prisoners included the legendary gangster Al Capone) the name of the village was changed to Ossining to distance itself from the prison.
